Bio
My name is Matthew Tucker. I have been working with double basses in Sydney since 2002.
I do setups, repairs and restorations, sell old and new instruments, sell some parts and accessories, and make new instruments on commission.
My hand-made basses have won several international tone awards.
Before becoming a double bass luthier I had a career as screen editor, documentary maker and film studio manager.
Expertise
I am mostly self taught, but have also studied with internationally renowned bass luthiers particularly at the excellent biannual Oberlin Double Bass Workshops.
In my approach to building, repair and restoration, I have a great respect for tradition, but I am not shy of innovation in the right context.
I use very careful and considered methods in all my work and take great pains to explain to my clients exactly what I am doing and why.
