This fine old double bass, attributed to English Master luthier William Tarr by Thomas Martin, has a big, dark, confident sound and is a great orchestral instrument. The widely slanted FF holes are typical of Tarr's work, and the machine tuners on a stocky pegbox are made by Manchester maker Rance.
The instrument's unfamiliar outline is thought to be the result of being cut down at some point, from a much larger double bass. RIbs are deep, the lower bout is super broad and the sound fills the room as one would expect from an instrument of this calibre.
