c1910 european bass
This instrument, restored in our workshop in 2020, is gamba-cornered flat-back double bass of uncertain origin with no labels or makers marks evident. The outline resembles some models made in France by makers such as Colin-Mézin or Lejeunne, but it is difficult to confirm that provenance. The top is made from two pieces of wide grained spruce, and has a low arching, reasonably symmetrical. The top has numerous old and more recent repairs and appears quite old. Back and sides are made of plain sycamore and are in very good condition.
The pegbox is well shaped with rounded cheeks. The volute is well carved but quite massive in proportion to the rest of the head. Tuners are quaint and hand forged. The bass has ebony pins in all the blocks, typical of basses made for export.
Smooth, dark voice, easy to get around. 42" string length, D neck and weighs 11.7kg
